Upon arrival at Sharm El Sheikh port, meet your

Drive through mountainous scenery to the famous
Saint Catherine's Monastery, set within massive granite walls at the very foot of Mount Sinai.
The valley first rose to prominence in the 4th Century AD when it was inhabited by Hermits from throughout the Byzantine empire who sought refuge in the wilderness near Mount Sinai. Such was its reputation that in 337 the Empress Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, ordered the building of a sanctuary around the site of the burning bush.
Increasing numbers of pilgrims visiting the site were occasionally attacked
by nomadic tribes, therefore, in 537, the Emperor Justinian, built the fortified enclosure and Church of the Virgin we will visit this morning.
Entering the
Monastery precincts, visit the
Basilica of Saint Catherine to view its magnificent icons and other famous works of art. Gaze up at the marvelous mosaic picturing of the Transfiguration of Christ. Also, visit the Charnel House and garden of the Monastery. Saint Catherine is a Greek Orthodox establishment whose monks have maintained excellent relations throughout the centuries with peoples of all nations and religions.
